Quran is the Holy book of Muslims. It was descended upon the Last Prophet, Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) more than 1400 years ago. The Holy Quran is the authentic word from Allah and it has preserved its form to date. Allah Himself has taken the responsibility of keeping the divine book safe and protected.
“Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur’an and indeed, We will be its guardian.” – [Al Hijr 15:9]
The Holy Prophet (PBUH) emphasized on reading the Quran daily. It is a form of guidance for all the mankind and its generations to come till the Day of Judgment. The Quran contains the word from Allah. It shares all the information that is required to become a true believer. Allah addresses the matters of Deen, Dunya and Akhirah in the Holy Quran. Therefore, if you have knowledge from the Quran, you don’t need to refer to any other book to solve your issues.
Only the recitation of one alphabet from Quran carries reward equal to 10 hasanah, then imagine the reward for the person who recites and remembers the whole Quran. A Hafiz-e-Quran bears within his heart light of purity and his mind is always busy with reflecting on Allah’s words. This makes him a truly practicing Muslim and increases his status in eyes of Allah.
As said by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH):
“Whosoever memorizes the Qur’an and practises on what is lawful and abstains from what is prohibited, Allah will enter him into Jannah and accept his intercession on behalf of ten such relatives who have been destined to enter Hell.” (Tirmidhi, Fadailu’l-Quran, 13; Ibn Majah, Muqaddima, 17)
Memorizing the chapters of Quran has very high rewards for the Muslims. Every Muslim would want to memorize the Quran by heart keeping this saying of Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in view:
“The best among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Quran and teach it (to others).” [Sahih Muslim Book 9, Hadith 993]
There are many virtues attached with the memorization of the Holy Quran.
“On the Day of Qiyaamah a crown of such brilliance will be placed on the heads of the parents of one who learnt the Qur’an and practised on its laws, that its glitter will outshine the brilliance of the sun which penetrates your houses. What then do you think will be the position of the one who himself learnt the Qur’an and acted in accordance with it?” (Ahmad and Abu Dawood)
Quran Memorization Tips
Memorizing the Quran is both a Spiritual and physical journey. However, it requires sincerity, consistency and perseverance from a person to become a Hafiz-e-Quran. There are different ways adopted by Muslims to memorize Quran. To increase the memorizing power, different methods are taught to the students. Some tips to make the memorizing process easy are shared here:
Select a Specific Time – Timing is a very important factor when memorizing Quran. Select a specific time of the day and allocate it for memorizing Quran. You should be able to figure out a time slot when you are most productive and attentive. The best suitable time for memorizing is early morning, just after you wake up, i.e. Fajr. At that time, your mind and body are both fresh and receptive. The mind stores the new information easily as it is free from the day’s fatigue. Also remember that you have to make time for memorizing Quran instead of waiting for a free moment to start the memorization. If you have decided to start the memorization then start now and don’t delay it for another day!
Be Consistent in Your Effort – Take small steps at start. We are all very excited at the beginning and take up more than we can handle which ends up in disappointment when we don’t see the desired result and even some people quit with the learning process. Instead of that, start slow. Consistency is more important than the amount you memorize. Make sure that you memorize a few lines from the Quran daily. Instead of taking big lessons at the end of the week, try to memorize a few ayats everyday. Creating a habit of memorizing few ayats each day will help you later on to remember the whole Quran as well as memorizing the longer verses.
Follow a Technique to Memorize Quran – When you start memorizing the Quran, you have to follow and plan according to a systematic way. Different people have different methods to memorize. You can start memorization process with 3 ayats a day and move on to more verses. Read the ayat you want to memorize 10 to 15 times. After you have read it by looking it on the paper/screen, now try to read it without looking. In this way you will develop a technique to memorize Quran. Sometimes, writing down the ayat also helps in remembering it by heart. After you have memorized one ayat, move on to the next ayat and repeat the same method. At the end of the lesson, repeat the three ayats together. You will have more ayats to revise each day before you start with memorizing new ayats.
Another tip regarding the memorization tip is to start from the last Quranic chapters. As Surahs at the end of Quran are short and are commonly recited among Muslims, it gives greater opportunity to remember the verses easily. It is both helpful and encouraging towards the learning process.
Repeat What You Memorized – Repetition is the key to memorization. It helps you remember what you learned a day before and also helps your brain in forming new cells to increase the capacity of learning and memorizing. So before you start up with memorizing new ayats, repeat the ayats you learned earlier. This will help you in connecting the ayats as well. Also, repeat the memorized ayats every time you find yourself free. Reciting the memorized ayats while offering prayers (Namaz) will also help you to remember them correctly. Repetition also serves the purpose of correction. So if you are forgetting something or unable to recite the Ayat correctly, you will catch your mistake timely to improve it.
Understand What You are Memorizing – You should try to understand the verses that you are memorizing. This helps in the memorization process. If Arabic is not your first language, keep a Translated copy of Quran with you while memorizing. This will increase your knowledge about Quran and also increase the reward. Almighty says:
“And We have indeed made the Qur’an easy to understand and remember: then is there any that will receive admonition?” [Al-Qamar 54:17]
Listen to Recitation of Quran – Listening to different recitation of Quran also helps in memorizing verses. If you are repeatedly listening to the same ayats, they will be engraved in your mind and you will remember them easily. Pick an audio of Quran recitation by a Qari which suits your listening and is easily understandable to you. Listen to it during the day or before going to sleep. In this way, you’ll be familiarized with the verses and it will enhance your capability to memorize Quran.
Take Guidance – If you are finding it difficult to memorize Quran on your own, you can take guidance of a professional teacher from GatewaytoQuran.com. A professional Quran tutor will help you with memorizing techniques. He/she will be there to listen to your memorized lessons and pick out mistakes. Also, when you select a tutor, it is easy for you to allocate a specific time as you are bound with the tutor. A good Quran tutor helps you achieve your memorization goal with constant encouragement and guidance.
Pick whatever method suits you but don’t delay in the memorization. Quran is indeed a Momin’s best friend. As the Prophet (PBUH) said,
“Read the Quran, it will be the intercessor of its companions on the Day of Resurrection” [Sahih Muslim Book 9, Hadith 991]
May Allah help everyone who is in quest of memorizing and understanding the Holy Quran. (Ameen)
