What are you Missing if you don’t Understand the Quran

Dear Readers,
Assalam o Alaikum!

The Quran is a guide to humanity. Since none of us want to be misguided, it is paramount not only to read or recite the Quran, but to understand and implement it in our lives as well.
Following are the top 10 things you are missing every day in your life if you don’t understand the Quran:

1. The Purpose of Revelation

If you don’t understand Qur’an and keep on reading it, the very purpose of revelation is lost. Allah SWT says: “ (Here is) a Book which We have sent down unto you (O Muhammad!), full of blessings, that they may mediate on its Signs, and that men of understanding may receive admonition [38:29].”
How can we do that if we don’t understand the Qur’an! One cannot and does not carry translation always, especially while listening to it in Salah!

2. The Garden of Mind

The mind is like a garden. If we don’t sow flowers, weeds will grow. Even if we sow flowers, weeds will still grow. We will need to remove the weeds continuously.
Flowers are the Guidance and the weeds are satanic thoughts. Allah SWT sows flower seeds into our brain every time we listen to Qur’an, especially in Salah/Namaz. If we don’t water them (ponder), they will be wasted and weeds may grow.

3. The Objectives of Recitation

There are 5 objectives of Reading Qur’an:
  • to receive rewards from Allah;
  • to gain knowledge;
  • to take action based on what Allah SWT is asking us to do;
  • to cure our heart and mind; and
  • to talk to Allah SWT!
How can we achieve all of these, especially the last four, if we don’t understand the Qur’an.

4. The Cleaning of Heart

People know that Fajr is compulsory but very few come to Masjid. Why? Not because they don’t know but because their hearts are rusted. We have a major misconception that Qur’an is a book of commandments only. The verses that deal with commandments constitute less than 10% of the total verses. The rest 90% is for the heart and mind. The heart keeps rusting and deviating because of sins. We need de-rusting and re-alignment.
Adam (A) was asked not to go near the tree. Allah says: “but he forgot; and We did not find in him any determination.” We humans have these weaknesses. We have several fitnahs (trials) surrounding us. We need continuous reminders and warnings which come to us only through daily recitation and listening to the Qur’an. Allah says about the Qur’an: “a healing for the (diseases) in your hearts” [10:57]. Can there be a better cure than what Allah has prescribed for us?

5. The Strengthening of heart

The Qur’an was revealed to the prophet (PBUH) in pieces. “And those who disbelieve say: Why has not the Quran been revealed to him all at once? Thus, that We may strengthen your heart by it and We have arranged it well in arranging. [25:32]. Heart should be firm in belief to His promises and warnings. Continuous pondering of the Qur’an everyday during and after Salahs helps us strengthen our hearts.

6. Daily ‘Talk’ (Munajaat) with Allah SWT

Prophet Muhammed (PUBH) used to interact with the recitation. “And when he recited the Verses which referred to the Glory of Allah, he glorified Him, the Great, and when he recited the Verses that mention supplication, he supplicated, and when he recited the Verses that mention seeking Refuge of the Rubb, he sought (His) Refuge.” [Muslim].
Can we live without talking at least five minutes every day to our near and dear ones? Allah is most beloved to us. He loves us more than seventy times that of our mothers. Still we live without bothering as to what Allah SWT said today to us during Salah!

7. Live Guidance

Whatever we read or listen to the Qur’an, remember that it is a live guidance from Allah SWT to each individual when he or she listens to Qur’an. It is a HUGE loss only if one can appreciates the value of live guidance from Allah, our own Creator. A wise man can never neglect this.

8. Relationship with Allah SWT

There are different dimensions to the relationship with Allah – His Love, Sincerity, Trust in Him, Remembering Him directly and whenever we see His signs in creation, Pondering His creation and in His names, not complaining of Qadaa, etc. This relationship is strengthened over time. It requires slow and steady cooking with regular heat coming from Qur’an.

9. Qu’ranic Character

According to Aisha (R), “His (the Prophet, pbuh) morals were the Qur’an”. The Qur’an is theory and the Prophet’s life was practical demonstration of that theory (thee Qur’an). We need to study the Seerah of the Prophet pbuh and keep relating the verses that we study to his life. This is a project in itself and requires one to ponder the verses every day along with the Seerah of the Prophet, pbuh.

10. Qur’anic Vision

As a patient starts describing his problems, the doctor’s mind starts working on diagnosis and comes up with the relevant medicines. Similary, we come across many situations in our life. We should be able to see solutions in the Qur’an corresponding to these situations. Only through continuous pondering and relating it to the daily life, one can attain this vision.
Best wishes

Quran on Fasting in Ramadhan

O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so
that you may guard (against evil).

(Fasting is) for a fixed number of days; and if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed
number (Should be made up) from days later, and for those (who miss the fast for illness or travel) who are able to do it, is a ransom of
feeding one that is indigent. But he that will give more, of his own free will, it is better for him.
And it is better for you that you fast, if you only knew.

The month of Ramadhan in which was revealed the Qur'an, guidance for mankind, and clear
proofs of the guidance, and the Criterion (of right and wrong). And whosoever of you is present,
let him fast the month, and whosoever of you is sick or on a journey, (let him fast the same)
number of other days. Allah desires ease for you; He does not desire hardship for you; and (He
desires) that you should complete the period, and that you should magnify Allah for having guided
you, and that peradventure you may be thankful.
Qur'an (2:183-185)
General

  • Fasting was prescribed for us to gain God consciousness.
  • Fast the month of ramadhan, you know its beginning and end by the moon phase where you are (e.g., see 2:189 and 6:96).
  • Fasting is for the 30 days of the month of ramadhan, these are the fixed days.

Purpose

  • Allah desires ease for us and not hardship, so this can be kept in mind.  Fasting is not supposed to be a damaging experience.
  • We should complete the period of fasting and glorify Allah.  It is better to fast so always make the effort and do not look to try and avoid it without good cause(s).

Holy Qur'an and Modern Science

Dear Readers, As  Salaamu Alaikum!

We are living in the age of computers, laser surgeries, advanced medical treatments, and cloning! In today’s world of constant scientifically groundbreaking discoveries, how can we accept that Allah’s revelation, The Quran, did not reveal this all before? Believing the entire world to be created by Allah Himself, the revealed 1400 years ago contains several verses of scientific knowledge, and none of them contradicting with today’s scientific facts and discoveries. (SubhanAllah)

Apart from guiding mankind personal, social, moral and spiritual areas, the Quran doesn’t stop here and also throws light on varied scientific topics like astronomy, geology, embryology, genetics, biology, archaeology an much more. Following lines will show you that Quran is truly a divine gift of Lord upon His creators. Read on.

The Big Bang Theory and Quran!
  • Modern Science: Astronomers of today accept the big bang philosophy for the creation of this universe. According to the theory, 15billion years ago a primordial mass exploded and the universe was formed. This was discovered somewhere in 1973.
  • The Quran: “Do not the unbelievers see that the Heavens and the earth were joined together, and then We split them apart.” (21:30)

Advices from Qur’an

Dear Readers, As Salaamu Alaikum!

The first lesson to be learned by all students is about the importance of the Holy Qur’aan. The Qur’aan is the Book of Allah subhaanahu wa ta‘aalaa. Every word in the Qur’aan has come from Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala). That is why we say that it is a Holy Book. 7 tips for improving your relationship with the Quran

Dear Readers, As Salaamu Alaikum!

ALL PRAISES AND THANKS TO ALLAH, LORD OF THE WORLDS!!

Are you one of those people who rarely touches the Quran? Or do you read daily, but don't find it is having the impact on you that it should? Whatever the case may be, these are some simple tips that can help you connect with the Quran.
1. Before you touch it, check your heart
The key to really benefiting from the Quran is to check your heart first, before you even touch Allah's book. Ask yourself, honestly, why you are reading it. Is it to just get some information and to let it drift away from you later? Remember that the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) was described by his wife as a "walking Quran": in other words, he didn't just read and recite the Quran, he lived it.

2. Do your Wudu (ablution)
Doing your Wudu is good physical and mental preparation to remind you you're not reading just another book. You are about to interact with Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala, so being clean should be a priority when communicating with Him.
3. Read only 5 minutes everyday
Too often, we think we should read Quran for at least one whole hour. If you aren't in the habit of reading regularly, this is too much. Start off with just five minutes daily. If you took care of step one, In sha Allah, you will notice that those five minutes will become ten, then half an hour, then an hour, and maybe even more!In sha Allah.
4. Make sure you understand what you've read
Five minutes of reading the Quran in Arabic is good, but you need to understand what you're reading. Make sure you have a good translation of the Quran in the language you understand best. Always try to read the translation of what you've read that day.
5. Remember, the Quran is more interactive than a CD
In an age of "interactive" CD-ROMs and computer programs, a number of people think books are passive and boring. But the Quran is not like that. Remember that when you read Quran, you are interacting with Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala. He is talking to you, so pay attention.
6. Don't just read, listen too
There are now many audio cassettes and CDs of the Quran, a number of them with translations as well. This is great to put on your walkman or your car's CD or stereo as you drive to and from work. Use this in addition to your daily Quran reading, not as a replacement for it.
7. Make Dua (supplication)
Ask Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala to guide you when you read the Quran. Your aim is to sincerely, for the love of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, interact with Him by reading, understanding and applying His blessed words. Making Dua to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala for help and guidance will be your best tool for doing this.

ORIGIN OF LIFE AND QURAN

"And You the biologists who seem to have your fingers on all organic life, and yet have
the temerity to deny the existence of the Source of that Life, i.e. God: tell me, according
to your vaunted research; where and how did life originate?"
Like his 'unbelieving' astronomer companion in science, he too begins - "Well, billions of
years ago primaeval matter in the sea began to generate protoplasm out of which came
the amoeba; and out of that mire in the sea came all living things. In one word ALL LIFE
came from the sea, i.e. Water!"
"And when did you discover this fact that all living things came from water?" The answer
is no different from that of his fellow scientist the astronomer - "Yesterday!" "No man
of learning, no philosopher or poet could ever have guessed your biological discovery
fourteen centuries back, could he?" we ask, and our biologist is as emphatic as the
astronomer. "No, never!" says he. "Well, then, you just listen to this untutored son of the
desert!"
The above statement is further elaborated in the Book of God:
It will not be difficult for you to note that these words of the Omnipotent, Omniscient
Creator of the Universe were addressed to YOU men of knowledge in answer to your
scepticism TODAY. Their real import was beyond the dwellers of the desert fourteen
centuries ago. The Author (God Almighty) is reasoning with YOU, you men of science,
how can YOU not believe in God? YOU should be the LAST to deny His existence and
yet you are the FIRST! What sickness has overtaken YOU that you allow your egos to
overshadow your sense of logic?
AND to the botanists and the zoologists and the physicists who, despite their amazing
insight into the nature of things, refuse to acknowledge a Master Creator. Let them then
account for these utterances of Muhummed (pbuh) the mouthpiece of God.

* "CREATED IN PAIRS" "The mystery of sex runs through all creation, - in man, in
animal life, in vegetable life, and in other things of which we have no knowledge. Then
there are pairs of opposite forces in nature, e.g. positive and negative electricity, etc.
The atom itself consists of a positively charged nucleus or proton, surrounded by
negatively - charged electrons. The constitution of matter itself is thus referred to as
pairs of opposite energies." (Comment by A. Yusuf Ali)
